Uvira General Referral Hospital was created in 1952 on the initiative of the "FBI" indigenous welfare fund. The construction work was led by Mr. KHULPE, of Belgian nationality. Built as a surgical medical center, its activities were directed by the first doctor, Dr. Louis ROUSSEAU, assisted by two religious sisters, nurses and twenty-three other lay nursing assistants. The institution served the entire territory ofuvira, where it was located, and its surroundings.
