The Makala ex SANATORIUM General Reference Hospital is a state hospital in Kinshasa. It was built in the time of Belgian settlers who contributed to the treatment of the disease called tuberculosis. The specific purpose of the Sanatorium Hospital was to treat tuberculosis patients. It was built by the Belgians from 1956 to 1958 with the plan to isolate people suffering from tuberculosis away from the city in order to avoid contamination. At that time, for the medical care of tuberculosis patients, there were two large hospitals in Africa: one in Burundi and another in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
