The prefectural hospital of the urban municipality of Mandiana, created in 1975, is located 560 km from the capital Conakry, in the Kankan region (Upper Guinea). It underwent only a partial renovation in 2005, with funding from the European Union, while it is the reference structure of the 12 health centers dependent on Mandiana Prefecture. The high number of hospital maternal and infant deaths, resulting in particular from the obsolescence of the premises and the lack of necessary medical equipment, justified the equipment as well as the renovation of the maternity department of the Mandiana Prefectural Hospital, its health system and the training of its nursing staff. To access to drinking water, NGOs donated a large batch of medical equipment, consumables to the prefectural hospital and the 12 health centers in the sub-prefectures with a training of thirty nurses and community health workers in hospital hygiene, emergency care and immobilization and plastering technique
