The original hospital in Gonaïves was destroyed in hurricanes in 2008. The project to build the new facility was launched under the Harper government in 2010. La Providence Hospital in Gonaïves is the largest in a region that encompasses more than 2.5 million people. Built on a total area of 1,500 m2 (with a floor area of 10,380 m2), the hospital has a capacity of 200 beds and is under the supervision of the Artibonite Health Department.
