The hospital is recognized in Haiti for the quality of its care and its ability to provide greater access to health care for the people of the Gros Morne area. Hôpital Alma Mater is a 60-bed Catholic hospital located in an impoverished rural region in northwest Haiti. Founded in 1969 by the local Gros Morne community under the leadership of a German Catholic Montfortain priest. Currently sponsored by Caritas of Gonaives. Overseen by a Board of Directors drawn from the local religious and civic community. Only hospital providing medical care for a community of 145,000 residents
