The Tamale Teaching Hospital was commissioned in 1974 as a regional hospital to provide healthcare services to the people of Tamale and its environs. It was also to serve as the main medical referral center for the northern sector of the country, including Upper East and West regions. The hospital previously operated from the premises of the Old Central Hospital and later moved to its present location after the construction of the new hospital was completed and commissioned in 1974.
