The hospital was founded in 1897 under the French protectorate. It is a university hospital, which was helped by its proximity to the Faculty of Medicine in Tunis. On the other hand, it is not limited to patients from the capital, but is intended for patients from all internal directions. It is considered the largest hospital in terms of number of beds with 1,025 beds. This hospital has 30 departments covering a total of 14 hectares. It covers almost all specialties, and includes an emergency department, 21 outpatient clinics, 17 treatment departments, 7 laboratories, a radiology department, and a pharmacy. As for surgery, the hospital has 30 operating theaters.
