The Hospital Psiquiatrico De Agudos Dr. Mario Mendoza is one of the main psychiatric facilities in Honduras. Dedicated psychiatric care in Honduras only began to develop in the mid-twentieth century, so the field is still developing in the country. Dr Mendoza, the physician for whom the hospital is named, brought a new depth to psychiatric care during his tenure as director of the hospital, frequently disagreeing with public policy on healthcare as discriminatory against the mentally ill. The hospital has an acute care unit that was the brainchild of Dr. Mendoza and is useful addition for psychiatric care at the hospital as it allows for more patient specific treatment. The hospital has also used the expertise of neurosurgeons to help with organic diagnoses of patients and to formulate follow-up care. The hospital has previously worked to bridge gaps in care for addition patients by the development of addiction specific groups within the hospital such as Alcohoholics Anonymous.
