The Hospital Escuela is a Tier 3 teaching hospital in Tegucigalpa that offers a wide variety of services and is the main teaching hospital for the University of Honduras School of Medicine. Tier 3 hospitals are the only level with trained staff and intensive care NICUs with ventilation equipment and technology. The hospital also has a specialist plastic surgery department that was integral to the establishment of a specific program that was designed to ensure the surgical and medical care of children with congenital deformities. This specialist program was established through the co-operative efforts of the University of Honduras School of Medicine, the Honduras Ministry of Health, and the Hospital Escuela Department of Plastic Surgery. The hospital offers teaching in both surgery and clinical medicine, which is offered by a faculty comprised of Honduran and United States physicians. Many of these medics provide pro bono teaching services for the residency program at the hospital.
