The Hospital De Occidente (The Hospital of the West) is located in the Copan Department in western Honduras, close to the Guatemalan border. The hospital provides a range of medical services and in 2010 was equipped with a new operating theatre that enabled staff at the hospital to be able to perform surgery in ophthalmology, otolaryngology and other specialties. The hospital is a main surgical hospital for the western region, serving patients from the departments of Ocotepeque, Copán, Lempira and parts of Santa Barbara and Intibucá. The hospital is classified as a governmental regional hospital and has a long history. It was originally established in 1902 as part of a project, before becoming a home for the destitute and later transforming into a hospital. This referral hospital provides medical care in the fields of Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics, Pediatrics Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Radiology, Anesthesia, Otolaryngology, Psychiatry and Public Health.
