In 1978, a guerrilla boy named Manuel de Jesús Rivera, nicknamed "La Mascota" for being the youngest in age of the rest of the guerrillas, fell on October 5 while fighting for the dream of a free Nicaragua. It was because of his deed that the National Reference Children's Hospital, founded in Managua on July 17, 1982, bears his name, as a tribute to his courage.
