Before 1975, the hospital was built on an area of 2.6ha, with a scale of 200 beds, with the name Thu Khoa Nghia Hospital (1895). This is the largest hospital in the region, directly under the Saigon Ministry of Health. On May 5, 1975, Thu Khoa Nghia Hospital changed its name to General Hospital of the Southwest region. On March 4, 1976, the National Assembly decided to merge the two provinces of Can Tho and Soc Trang into Hau Giang province. Southwest General Hospital was renamed Hau Giang General Hospital. The number of beds has been increased to 550 beds, serving treatment for people in the area. In 1992, Hau Giang province split into Can Tho and Soc Trang provinces, Hau Giang General Hospital changed its name to Can Tho General Hospital. At this time, the hospital has trained a team of highly skilled doctors, so it has attracted a large number of patients from the Mekong Delta provinces. In 2004, Can Tho province was further divided into Hau Giang province and Can Tho city, an urban center directly under the Central Government. Up to this point, Can Tho City General Hospital has completed its historic mission of more than a century of serving the people. Can Tho City General Hospital was re-established under Decision No. 2482/QD-UB dated November 17, 2006 of the Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee. In 2014, the new hospital was built at address 04 - Chau Van Liem - Tan An Ward - Ninh Kieu District - City. Can Tho with a scale of 500 beds officially started construction with a total investment of 853 billion VND. The work has a construction area of 8,997.23m2, the usable floor area is 49,646.5m2. Construction items include the main building block of the hospital, the scale of 1 basement and 9 floors. Can Tho City General Hospital is approved by the government to purchase equipment from a total of 22 million EURO. In which, support from ODA (France) is 19.5 million Euro. The goal of the project is to invest in equipment, in order to improve the quality and meet the medical examination and treatment needs of the people.
