Today's Viet Duc Friendship Hospital was established in 1902 along with the establishment of Indochina Medical School, the predecessor of Hanoi Medical University. From 1904 the hospital moved to its present location with the name of Hôpital indigène du Protectorat. The hospital bears different names through each period of the country's history: Yersin Hospital (1943), Phu Doan Hospital (1954), Vietnam Friendship Hospital - German Democratic Republic (1958-1990). and Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital from 1991 to present. During the process of establishment and development, the hospital has always been a leading medical center associated with medical examination and treatment with medical scientific research and training, which produces Vietnam's top doctors. In the South, there are many famous medical celebrities: Ho Dac Di, Ton That Tung, Nguyen Trinh Co, Nguyen Duong Quang…. Today, the hospital is a specialized medical center, ranked as a special specialty hospital according to Decision No. 1446/QD-BNV dated September 21, 2015 of the Minister of Home Affairs. The hospital has a size of 1500 beds with more than 2,200 doctors, staff and medical staff, including: 5 Professors, 32 Associate Professors, 40 PhDs, 221 Masters and Postgraduate Specialists. The organizational structure of the Hospital consists of 3 main blocks: The administrative - logistics division has: Hospital Board of Directors, Training Center - directing line and 12 functional departments. Clinical block has: Institute of Trauma and Orthopedics, 06 Centers, 21 Clinical Departments. The subclinical block includes 8 departments, 1 blood transfusion center and 1 pharmacy. The hospital's party committee has 12 branches with 342 members, which has always been a clean and strong party committee for the past 15 years. Hospital union has 2105 union members. The Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union has 750 members.
