In the early 1990s with the country’s worsening economic condition and increasing labor unrest, Paper Industries Corporation of the Philippines (PICOP), the owner of Andres Soriano Memorial Hospital (ASMH), started its corporate direction. A feasibility study was done with the Hospital Administrator, Mr. Carlos for the possible conversion of the hospital into an independently operated corporate unit from PICOP. The original cooperator of ASMH at that time was not privy to this study, but the ASMH Core Group was able to acquire a copy of this. Around mid-1995, when MR. Ramon Ang took over PICOP Resources Inc. (PRI), he manifested that he was interested for ASMH to be ran by employees as a cooperative. The ASMH Core Group at the time composing of Dr. Enrico Estrella, Dr. Ike Blanco, Dr. Diony de Castro, in close coordination and consultation with Dr. J.S. Urquico, Dr. V.T. Tan, Dr. A.L. Dimaano, Dr. R.D. Dimaano, Dr. C.M. Riconalla, Dr. F.T. Agujetas, and Dr. L.A. Lima immediately made a feasibility study using the date from the feasibility study for a corporate hospital nad immediately manifested the willingness to run the hospital as a cooperative In teh first quarted fo the year 1996, we negotiated with Miss Bebs Calderon, the Finance Manager of Mr. Ang to allow us to use the 10% money that was taken from the PRofessional Fees of ASMH Doctors & Dentist for the purpose of purchasing medical equipment for ASMH which up to that day was never used for anything, AS STARTING CAPITAL.
