The 100-bed hospital has a team of approximately 200 staff, mainly Bangladeshi with a small number of long-serving expatriates and visiting doctors. Working across Inpatient Departments (IPD) and Outpatient Departments (OPD) are more than 20 doctors providing full emergency care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Bangladesh is a country of extremes. It's a fertile and beautiful country with great potential experiencing rapid economic growth. As the home of microcredit, Bangladesh inspires and encourages entrepreneurship to alleviate poverty. And, yet, it is one of the poorest countries in Asia. One of the world's most densely populated countries, Bangladesh’s growing population, experiences frequent natural disasters and flooding. With low lying land and climate change causing rising sea levels, coastal land is disappearing. Communities are losing their homes, lives are endangered and livelihoods destroyed. The vision for LAMB began in the early 1950s with Mr. John Otteson, from the American Santal Mission. He saw an urgent need for the hundreds of thousands of people who had no access to proper healthcare. Today, LAMB Hospital treats approximately 55,000 outpatients every year – nearly 230 a day. 7,500 inpatients a year are given surgery or medical treatment, and around 2,500 babies delivered.
