In May 2017, under the Adama Barrow government, Sulayman Jungkung General Hospital was renamed Bwiam General Hospital. Bwiam General Hospital is a referral health facility with 200 beds and a catchment of 200,000 people. It also serves as a treatment center for other West African countries. The Bwiam General Hospital was built in 2003 and is operated by the Gambian Government Ministry of Health. It is one of only a handful of hospitals serving the Gambia. Built-in 2003 by the Gambian government, it serves the local and surrounding population of 100,000. It treats approximately 16,000 patients annually. It is operated and funded by the Gambian government ministry of health. The 2 room accident and emergency department (“A & E”) are open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, and includes a twenty-three-hour 4-bed observation unit. It is staffed by nurses and foreign service physicians from Cuba.
