Vanimo General Hospital is a recipient of a PGK6.4 million Incentive Fund grant under the Papua New Guinea-Australia Partnership to build a new maternity ward and upgrade electricity, water and sewerage systems at Vanimo General Hospital; the grant includes PGK1 million in counterpart funding from West Sepik Provincial Hospital. The hospital previously completed an Incentive Fund project in 2013, which included a new administration building and accommodation for nurses. The upgrades will improve health and safety by reducing power outages affecting surgeries, preventing discharge of raw effluent into Narimo Bay, and ensuring water provision meets international standards. The new maternity ward will increase supervised deliveries and improve maternal and newborn care and waiting space. Australian High Commissioner Bruce Davis visited Vanimo General Hospital on 8 June as part of engagement with the West Sepik Provincial Health Authority.
