Project 10,000 (Uganda) - Primary Care, NCD Screening & EducationOpportunity

Overview

In partnership with MULAGO Hospital, Angel Wing Health Center, GULU Referral Hospital and Child Voice International, PWH will provide education and training to physicians and nurses on non-communicable diseases, medication administration, wound care education, infection control and emergency care. In addition, we will provide primary care services, consultation, and wound care clinic in Mbale and Manawfu in North East Uganda. Community wide education will occur with our colleagues in the rural areas. Project 10,000 will be provided for pregnant women and NICU training in Mulago Hospital and Gulu Hospital.

 

We will depart on or around January 1 to Kampala. Our first week will be in Kampala followed by onward travel to Gulu and Manawfu where we will begin our educational program and then return to Kampala prior to departure. Team members will have an opportunity to visit a school for the disabled, Jinja, home of the beginning of the Nile and visit Cipla, a successful Ugandan pharmaceutical company. 

PARTICIPANTS NEEDED:

10-15 total​

PHYSICIANS: 1 GYN OB, 1-2 Primary Care Physician, 1 Neonatologist; 1-2 Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) in respective specialties​

NURSES: 2 NICU, 6 RNs with demonstrated experience with inpatient, wound care, primary care, nursing education/teaching​

STUDENTS: 3-4 students (medical and non-medical welcome) will have an opportunity to shadow licensed medical participants, as well as interviewing pregnant women and participating in primary health care intake/triage.​

NON MEDICAL: 2-4 participants to help with primary care patient intake and triage, and administrative duties

COST ESTIMATE $3000-$3300*:  Fee includes RT air fare**, single occupancy accommodations (double occ may result in lower cost - if another participant is willing to room together), all breakfasts, lunches and most dinners, interpreters, in-country drivers, gas and vehicles.

**Airfare estimate assumes departure/return to either Portland, Maine (PWM) or Boston, Massachusetts (BOS); costs for additional flight legs are the responsibility of the participant

ORIENTATION: will be provided at the PWH headquarters prior to departure along with detailed itinerary and plan for the trip.  Remaining flexible is important as plans sometimes change.
