Christian Eye Ministry

Aims to eliminate unnecessary blindness by establishing and supporting low-cost, locally managed eye centers to offer the world’s poorest communities modern eye care.

Overview

Since 1982, Christian Eye Ministry has worked diligently to improve eye care in Africa and Central America. In addition to basic eye services and training of healthcare professionals, CEM also conducts research projects focused on common eye diseases in these populations. Our volunteer doctors were the first to perform cataract surgery with intraocular lenses, glaucoma surgery with antimetabolites, and glaucoma drainage implant surgery in Ghana.

We have volunteer opportunities for ophthalmologists and optometrists, as well as all levels of ophthalmic support staff at our clinics located in Ghana.
CEM-associated clinics are open year-round (except Easter & Christmas holidays), are fully equipped and have well-trained full-time staff. Volunteers are needed in various capacities including training, mentoring, medical treatment and diagnosis as well as surgical interventions.
Trips are typically 1-2 weeks but it is not at all unusual to have volunteers work from 6 weeks to a year if their schedule allows. Retired ophthalmologists are welcome; residents need to work with a licensed ophthalmologist.

This opportunity is located in Tema, Ghana.
