Medical Volunteer for Gizo Hospital (Solomon Islands)Opportunity

Overview

Short-term surgical, medical, and training missions delivering emergency surgical care, anesthesia, specialty mentoring, and general clinical services to underserved populations in the Solomon Islands Western Province; visiting specialist volunteer teams work collaboratively alongside local surgeons, generalist doctors, and nursing staff at Gizo Hospital (the regional referral facility for Western Province) and, increasingly, at National Referral Hospital (NRH) in Honiara. DAISI missions to Solomon Islands have been active since at least 2015, with documented surgical and training activities occurring in September 2024, November 2023, and December 2022.

Mission scheduling and venues: DAISI coordinates missions across September-December (spring/summer in the Southern Hemisphere; school holiday seasons) as primary windows, though timing remains flexible based on fundraising, partner availability, and clinical priorities. Gizo Hospital remains the established core site for Western Province surgical outreach, particularly for colorectal, general, and oral-maxillofacial surgery specialties; simultaneously, DAISI has expanded collaborative engagement with National Referral Hospital (NRH) in Honiara, where endoscopy, gastroenterology, and oncology training partnerships now operate alongside surgical missions. Both facilities serve as volunteer placement hubs, with Gizo serving primarily short-term surgical missions and NRH supporting longer-term medical training exchange and specialty development.

Impact and training focus: Missions emphasize joint surgical planning, anesthesia mentorship, and capacity-building; local Gizo Hospital surgeons and anesthetists participate in case planning and skill transfer alongside visiting teams. High patient volumes (500+ treated annually across Solomon Islands missions) include emergency cases, scheduled surgeries, and referral cases from outer islands requiring operative intervention. Post-mission reporting includes case summaries, patient counts, referral pathways, and identified training needs for follow-on missions.
