PODEMOS began as a student initiative in the summer of 2008. It was pioneered by four students from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and a law student from the Moritz College of Law. Following a community needs assessment emphasizing epidemiology and the availability of medical resources, PODEMOS identified three medically underserved communities with which to build a sustainable partnership. This initial dialogue cemented the foundation for friendship and trust between the students and their future patients.
In May and December of each year, a team of physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, dentists, medical students, dental students, and pharmacy students travel to El Progreso, Honduras to provide care to patients. PODEMOS provides service to 700-900 patients each brigade, approximately half of whom are pediatric patients. Conditions we commonly treat include viral illnesses, fungal infections, gastroesophageal reflux disease, urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted infections, musculoskeletal conditions, cellulitis and abscesses. We also provide an anti-parasitic agent to each patient in our clinic along with vitamins to women of childbearing age and infants. We return reliably to the same communities every 6 months. Thus, we have families return over and over again for care, we have seen children grow up, and most importantly — we have witnessed lasting, positive change in the communities we serve.
Help PODEMOS reach its goals of providing consistent care to the communities of Ebenezer, Siete de Abril, Brisas de Libertad, and Brisas del Norta. Volunteer your time and skills on one our trips.
Health care providers, ever say ” I always wanted to serve abroad, but I just haven’t found the time or organization”? If you have (or even if you haven’t) PODEMOS is looking for you. Columbus area doctors, nurse practitioners, physician’s assistants, and physical therapists are the muscle that makes our efforts in Honduras fruitful. PODEMOS currently travels to Honduras in both December/January and May. If you would like to be one of the providers in an upcoming trip, please fill out the form here.
This opportunity is located in El Progreso, Honduras.
