MEDICO organizes several short-term medical missions each year to Puerto Cabezas (Bilwi), Nicaragua, focusing on both urban and remote indigenous communities in the Región Autónoma de la Costa Caribe Norte. Volunteers are based at the Centro de Salud Bilwi, which serves as the hub for outreach in the region. Each mission lasts about one week and is typically scheduled during the dry season (January–April and August–November) to ensure reliable travel to remote communities.
Who Can Volunteer:
MEDICO welcomes a range of healthcare professionals, including physicians (family medicine, pediatrics, OB-GYN, internal medicine, infectious diseases), dentists and dental surgeons, ophthalmologists and optometrists, nurses (general, maternal/child health), allied health professionals (lab techs, pharmacists, health educators, dental hygienists), and, on a case-by-case basis, students and residents. Each team typically consists of 10–20 volunteers.
Services Provided:
Volunteers deliver primary medical care, pediatric care, women’s health services, dentistry and oral surgery, vision screening and minor eye procedures, infectious disease care, and health education. Teams also empower local health promoters through training and education.
Logistics:
Volunteers are responsible for their own international airfare, while MEDICO provides in-country transport, secure guesthouse or hotel accommodations, and all meals. Spanish is the primary working language in clinics, though English is helpful for team coordination. Volunteers stay in secure guesthouses or hotels with running water and electricity; Wi-Fi is available in urban centers but limited in rural areas. Bed nets are provided if needed. Meals are prepared by local staff or at the guesthouse, and dietary restrictions can be accommodated with advance notice.
Requirements:
All clinical volunteers must be licensed and in good standing in their home country. MEDICO assists with temporary Nicaraguan registration and permissions, and a background check is required. CDC-recommended immunizations for Nicaragua are required, including Hepatitis A/B, Typhoid, routine vaccines, Rabies, Malaria prophylaxis, and others.
Application & Contact:
Volunteers participate in pre-mission virtual training and an in-country briefing. The focus is on direct patient care in rural and indigenous communities, typically seeing 50–70 patients per volunteer per day.
