By becoming a volunteer with Health Volunteers Overseas, you’ll join a network of more than 10,000 health professionals who have volunteered their time and expertise to teach, train and collaborate with local health providers in resource-scarce countries over the past 30+ years.

Each year, we send hundreds of highly qualified health care professionals to our project sites around the world.

You do not need previous formal teaching experience to volunteer with HVO, nor is it necessary to speak the local language since most of the training is conducted in English. We accept volunteer applications and schedule assignments throughout the year (apply here). With our focus on teaching and training local providers, all HVO volunteers have experience and knowledge to share, but specific requirements depend upon health specialty, location and nature of the training project.

Thimphu, Bhutan – National Referral Hospital & Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan

Physicians, laboratory professionals, and nurses are needed. To fulfill the project goals, volunteers participate in the daily activities on the oncology inpatient and outpatient unit with the emphasis on education and role modeling. In addition, volunteers prepare lectures/presentations for the hospital staff about cancer related topics. As the project develops, there is interest in collaborating with the chemotherapy pharmacist and helping to develop chemotherapy and pain management protocols.

Project type: Hybrid (in-person and virtual)

Length of assignment: 1 month in-person; variable for virtual

Qualifications: Physicians & nurses specialized in oncology; board-certified or in active practice for at least 5 years. Final year oncology fellows and or physicians who recently completed fellowships will be accepted if paired with an appropriate preceptor.

Housing: Housing is provided.

Companions: Adults only, no minors.
