Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Opportunity provided by

Australian Doctors for Africa

Develops healthier environments and builds capacity through the provision of voluntary medical assistance, while training and teaching doctors, nurses, and allied health workers; improving infrastructure; and providing medical equipment.

Overview

Since 2006, orthopaedic surgery, treatment and training, have been the cornerstone of our activities in Ethiopia.  Visiting volunteer Orthopaedic medical teams conduct clinical consultations, surgical procedures, with an emphasis on training for surgeons and staff. Training involves mentoring during operations, ward rounds, lectures and structured teaching programs.

Providing intensive training courses to orthopaedic surgeons and nurses is a sustainable way to advance skills and improve services to patients.

The Infrastructure Development Program of ADFA in Ethiopia has improved access to well-equipped orthopaedic theatres at the Black Lion Hospital, Felegehiwot Referral Hospital, Hawassa University Hospital, Jugal Referral Hospital in Harar, and Dessie Referral Hospital. Delivery of sea containers of donated medical equipment and provision of orthopaedic surgical equipment completes the renovations to a high standard, and enables improved outcomes to patients.

Additional notes & documents

ADFA assignments are in general approx. 14 days. Teams are generally comprised of 3 – 8 members. Each team has a designated, experienced team leader, who’s responsibilities are to provide leadership and direction. Medical and non-medical volunteers are invited to fulfil specific tasks for each visit in accordance with the operational plan and budget. It is expected that team members will support each other professionally. Frequently this requires multi-skilling and a cooperative attitude to ensure that the overall goals are met. Recruitment of volunteers involved in overseas assignments will be subject to screening, will need to undertake mandatory safeguarding training, and will be required to abide by ADFA’s codes of conduct. If you would like to know more about Volunteering with ADFA, please see our Volunteer Manual.
