Vision Health International

Brings high-quality eye care to underserved communities around the world.

Overview

VHI field programs offer the experience of a lifetime. We work with people who have little to no access to eye care and are grateful for the high-quality care we provide. We change the lives of our patients, who before seeing us are often unable to live independently or perform daily tasks on their own, have new chances in life after seeing us and receiving cataract surgery or eyeglasses. We are always looking for qualified professionals to join us on our rewarding field programs. We typically bring ophthalmologists, optometrists, opticians, ophthalmic techs, anesthesiologists, scrubs, circulators, pre and post op caregivers, operating room supervisors, autoclave and instrument sterilization assistants, interpreters, and field vision screening volunteers. The typical cost for a VHI international field program ranges from $25,000 to $50,000 total, depending on the trip length and focus. To offset this cost, there is a participation fee for volunteers, which is $750 for doctors and $550 for all other roles. Volunteers are responsible for their  own round trip airfare to and from the main city. VHI provides all essential in-country expenses related to food, lodging, and transportation.

We plan and implement a number of week-long service trips each year, for which we recruit dedicated vision care professionals and highly-qualified personnel to volunteer their time to deliver high-quality vision care to the local community. VHI field programs offer the experience of a lifetime—we work with communities with little to no access to eye care who are grateful for the high-quality care we provide.

VHI has worked closely over the years with the Serving at the Crossroads and Clinica Manos Amigas in La Entrada, Honduras to build capacity and provide vision care. We will be performing high-volume, Manual Small Incision cataract surgery (MSICS) in rural Honduras in addition to strabismus surgery to fix alignment in the eyes for children and adults.
