Seeks to bring expert care and hope to the Honduran poor to eliminate the health disparities they experience.

Overview

Our International Medical Program (IMP) aims to improve health infrastructure, enhance the capacity of local health professionals, and provide high-quality medical care to low-income patients from underserved communities.
In Honduras, many people have limited access to surgeries due to financial and geographical barriers.

According to the OCHA, 58% of women in Honduras lack access to obstetric and gynecologic services.

The UN reports that Honduras only has 9.5 hospital beds per 10,000 people, (the second lowest in Central America)

At the VHC Medical Brigade, we are committed to bringing life-changing surgeries and medical care to rural communities in Honduras, striving to improve the health and well-being of those in need.

The Brigade was built by volunteers, and we still greatly depend on volunteer support. Volunteers do outreach in their communities, raise funds, and provide medical assistance for the Brigade’s medical trips. As a volunteer, you’ll have opportunities to learn more about our work. We are always looking for new volunteers to help us advance our mission.

During our surgical missions to Honduras, our dedicated team of experienced surgeons specializes in ophthalmology, general surgery, and gynecological surgery. We not only provide essential surgical services in these areas but also prioritize training and support for local healthcare providers. This approach ensures that communities receive high-quality care and that local healthcare professionals can continue delivering specialized surgical services long after our missions. Our mission is to improve the health of these communities while building the capacity of the local healthcare systems for sustainable, long-term impact.

If you have questions or are a returning volunteer, please contact Mary Ellen Gannon.
